Teaching

I have a number of adult students as well as younger learners, currently ranging from the age of 8-75, so please don’t feel nervous if you are a more mature person looking to learn. Whatever style you want, whatever pace you wish, I’m experienced in all ages and abilities, beginner to advanced. I don’t just teach the grades and the notes, I teach how to perform. My lessons are fun and relaxed, and whether it’s Mozart, Stravinsky, The Beatles, Deep Purple, John Coltrane, Madness or Metallica, I’m comfortable with whatever you throw my way!

His enthusiasm and encouragement is relentless which always lifts spirits in the room and shapes a fun learning environment. “

Emma Austin- composer, guitarist

I worked with Emma while she studied her diploma at ACM, she went on to study film composition at the University of Liverpool.

“Leo has been tutored in the art of guitar playing for two years now. No way would we dream of going to anybody else. Jamie makes lessons fun and engaging.

Leo’s progress has been very pleasing, long may it continue.” – Neil Burrow (Leo’s Dad)

Leo Burrow has been learning classical guitar and has recently taken to electric guitar, 10 years old and killing it!

“Jamie is an expert on a wide range of musical styles and instruments which is wonderful. His grasp of theory and composition are remarkable – and while those things are really cool, what marks him out as being extraordinary is his passion for music. He loves music and you can’t help but feel the same when Jamie teaches. Lessons are fun, sometimes challenging and always interesting. I have been coming for lessons for over two years now and I gain something different from each one. I would recommend Jamie without a moment’s concern.”

Mark Long has been a regular for some time, learning saxophone, theory, and more recently composition. We’ve become good chums and he attends the occasional show!

“After deciding to take up the Saxophone up I contacted Jamie for some much needed help! I’ve now been having lessons with him for 2 months and am absolutely loving them. Jamie has the patience of a Saint and makes lessons so enjoyable with a range of music and basic theory to help me progress. He put me at ease right away and gives me confidence when playing each week. I would highly recommend Jamie as a music teacher for any age and ability.”

Izzy Wooldridge is a fairly new student but within two lessons she was busting out Duke Ellington and improvising solos!

“I have been a student of Jami’s for several years and am delighted with the progress I am making.  My passion is jazz and Jami supports this with exercises and tunes that are great fun but also challenging.  He incorporates teaching of the saxophone with appropriate theory, currently developing my understanding of chord progressions. His approach is to encourage but not force a particular style or teaching method; I feel it is a collaboration which is exactly as I wanted.  He includes encouragement of improvisation with useful guidance.  I know he teaches a range of other instruments and music theory to other students.  His overall approach and expertise is first rate and I have no hesitation in recommending him; it is music teaching the way it should be.”

Paul Hillman has been with me for some years, he has actually enhanced my knowledge of jazz with his incredible enthusiasm and reading on the subject. From being a great soloist, he’s now got a really solid knowledge of music reading, music theory and applied harmony.

“Jamie Wilson is a composer and multi-instrumentalist. As a professional musician myself, I have been impressed with the way Jamie has consistently brought his exacting standards and high expectations to bear in his teaching, whilst still keeping the lessons fun and engaging. The rapid progress that my daughter has made on the clarinet under Jamie’s guidance has been truly phenomenal.”

Peter Skuce (Kora’s Dad)

Kora has been with me for just over a year and is (crazily) studying towards her grade 6 clarinet! The credit goes to her for hard work and plenty of talent, what a star!
